Three secrets to wow your audience every time
Thursday, 04 February 2010
Did you ever leave an interview wishing you had done a better job communicating your strengths? How important are presentation skills in advancing your career and building your personal brand? What makes for an engaging presentation? This week's podcast is from The Canadian Career Development Webinar Series with Carmine Gallo author of The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs-How to be Insanely Great in Front of Any Audience. I invited Carmine on our webinar because I have seen many talented professionals held back by not realizing the value that presentation skills play in career success. Carmine has been coaching the world's largest brands on how to raise their profile and to communicate more effectively in a highly competitive world. Millions of people tuned in to hear Steve Jobs launch the new Ipad, a tablet based computer. Why? Partly because we know that Apple seems to continually create breakthrough products, but mainly because Steve Jobs is an insanely great presenter.  Carmine Gallo, a columnist with Businessweek.com, shares his research and ideas on what Steve Job's secrets are.

According to Carmine, there are 3 keys that Steve Jobs uses every  time that he presents, to create a "wow" when he takes the stage.

1- Create the Story - A strong story will give you the confidence and ability to win over your audience.
2- Deliver the Experience - Turn your presentations into visually appealing and "must-have" experiences.
3- Refine and Rehearse - Steve spends numerous hours preparing and rehearsing for his presentations.

Bonus: Reveal a “Holy Sh**t” Moment - Studies (and experience) show we don’t remember boring information or stories. How can you use humour, props or a zippy story to truly leave a lasting impression and stand apart?

You don't have to be a billionaire or a CEO, to use these simple principles. Steve has been working on his skills for over 30 years, there really are no secrets, all of us can start working on our presentation skills. As the world's foremost management consultant Peter Drucker once commented, "When you move one step up from the bottom, your effectiveness depends on your ability to reach others through the spoken and written word."

This week, take a moment to view Steve Jobs on Youtube, your career will thank you!
