Prospector Boys Counsellor
Contract Dates: June 27th – Aug 26th, 2010
Position Summary
The Prospector Counsellor is responsible for providing a safe, fun and educational nature -oriented advanced camp experience for campers aged 13 to 15 years.
Position Duties
Programme Planning and Delivery
•play a role in planning and delivering all camp programmes, including: special events; campfires; wide games; and, mealtime programme
•plan and deliver programmes for Prospector campers, following specified programme guidelines and objectives
•lead an offsite canoeing trip each week
•be able to lead all programme options offered during the residential camp
•effectively manage safety risks at all times
•include campers of all abilities in all programmes
Camper Care and Supervision
•ensure campers return home in the same (or better) condition in which they were sent to camp
•manage all risks present during the camp session
•ensure campers maintain an adequate level of health and hygiene
•assist campers in problem solving dilemmas as they occur, referring the dilemmas to appropriate resource staff as needed
•redirect the behavior of campers as needed in a fair and appropriate way
•provide 24 hour per day positive role modeling and supervision
Supervision of an Assistant Counsellor
•provide Assistant Counsellors with opportunities to develop skills required of a counsellor
•provide Assistant Counsellors with feedback on their performance at the end of the camp session and on an ongoing basis
Maintenance/ Administrative Duties
•help campers to keep their area in a clean and orderly manner
•assist campers in carrying out sparkle time duties as assigned
•assist in pre-camp set-up and post-camp clean-up
•complete reports as required (incident, behavioral, et cetera)
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
18 years of age by commencement of camp programme
current Standard First Aid and CPR
programme delivery experience in an outdoor residential environment
current Canoe instructor certification OR National Lifeguard Certification
Pleasure Craft Operator Card
NOTE:
—All programme staff members are required to live on site, so room and partial board are provided. Due to the residential nature of the Centre actual hours of work vary, however; programme hours during fall, winter and spring are from 7:45am to 9:00 p.m.
—All successful candidates are required to submit a Criminal Reference Check and an Intervention Record Check from Alberta Children’s Services.
