QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have at least one year of camp counseling experience.
• Must be self-motivating and directing.
• Must relate well to children, youth and adults.
• Must have the ability to originate, plan, organize, and carry out the outdoor skills program.
• Must have a lifestyle that is an expression of Christian ethics and principles.
• Must have appropriate emotional maturity and stability, and be willing to accept responsibility and work with others in a team situation.
• Must be adaptable and flexible as individual situations warrant.
• Must have Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR.
• Must have camping and outdoor activity leadership skills.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Outdoor Educator is responsible for all outdoor educational (excluding waterfront) activities at the camp. He/she will be responsible for a daily session of outdoor education with the campers. All activities designed by the Outdoor Educator are to provide a safe and age appropriate outdoor skill level within the Christian community.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Program
• Design appropriate lessons for camp sessions considering age and dynamics of campers as well as camp themes.
• Create lessons which cater to goal setting and group building for each age group of campers.
• Conduct inventory of equipment checking for safety, cleanliness, and good repair prior to the beginning and at the completion of the camp season.
• Provide the Director with a list of supplies needed for the summer.
• Ensure that safe and proper procedures are followed by staff and campers using the low ropes courses.
• Ensure the proper maintenance and regular storage of the low ropes, sporting and camping equipment.
• Monitor the outdoor education activity schedule and modify as required.
• Maintain a log of outdoor education activities to compare to the schedule and provide guidance for the following year.
• May be required to sleep in a cabin when registration numbers warrant.
B. Christian Community
• Welcome campers, parents or guardians, and volunteers.
• Attend training sessions.
• Act as a goodwill ambassador for Camp Kannawin.
• Participate in the daily staff Bible study.
• Participate in all on-site camp activities except during scheduled time off.
• Work with the team to attain the objectives of a Christian community.
• Comply with camp rules.
• Ensure that all campers, comply with camp rules and the Camp Director is notified of any violation of rules.
• Attend daily staff meeting.
C. Other
• Participate in the end of season site cleaning
• Complete an End of Season inventory listing of outdoor education resources in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
• Participate in the maintenance and cleanliness of common areas.
• Complete the self assessment portion of the camp evaluation process.
• Assist the Director with other duties that may be assigned.
